Choosing a ceramic pot for your plant

A practical Prêt-à-Pot guide to comparing nursery-pot size, planter openings, drainage, saucers and placement before choosing a ceramic plant pot.

Begin with the pot your plant is in

Measure the nursery pot at its widest point, including its rim, and measure its height. Keep these measurements with you while browsing. A decorative planter’s outside width can be larger than its usable opening, especially where the rim narrows.

If the product page gives only overall dimensions, send the studio your nursery-pot measurements and the planter name. Ask us to confirm the inside opening and depth before ordering.

Drainage and cover pots are different

Check whether the particular planter has a drainage hole and whether a saucer is included. These details cannot be established from a styled photograph alone.

If you use a ceramic piece as a cover pot, keep the plant in a suitable nursery pot that can be removed for watering. Let the nursery pot drain before putting it back, and check that water is not collecting in the outer pot. Follow the watering requirements of your plant.

Plan the position as well as the size

For a tabletop, allow enough room for the pot and any saucer, and protect surfaces from moisture. For a wall planter, confirm its mounting requirements and use fixings appropriate to the wall and loaded piece.

For an outdoor position, ask about the specific model and finish. Indoor styling, a ceramic material or a photograph on a patio does not by itself confirm suitability for prolonged weather exposure.

Ordering a large planter

Large pieces need a little more planning. Measure access through doors and around stairs, and include the delivery suburb with your enquiry. Ask us to confirm the price, availability, dimensions, drainage and delivery arrangements for your chosen piece.
